Compare Digital SLR Cameras of Canon and Nikon
Before we compare digital SLR cameras of the two top camera manufacturers, it is worthwhile to know the basic technology of the DSLR cameras.
DSLR cameras or Digital Single Lens reflex cameras are named so because they are not point and shoot cameras. The image maintains its singularity in the photographer’s reflex judgment and image clicked by the photographer is exactly same as what the photographer has directly seen through the viewfinder.
What that means is that in ‘point and shoot’ cameras the image that passes through the primary lens of the camera is not the same as the image that the photographer sees through the viewfinder. These are the commonly used digital cameras, where sometimes the viewfinder portion is completely omitted from the body of the camera. In DSLR cameras, the same primary lens that captures the image is also the lens of the viewfinder. Thus, the photographer clicks what he or she sees through the viewfinder. A display of the image at the back of the camera makes the visualization perfect.
Both Canon and Nikon manufactures digital SLR cameras in mainly three categories. The first category is the amateur level cameras like the Canon Rebel XS (1000D) and the Nikon D60. When we compare digital SLR cameras Rebel XS and D60, we find that there is an important difference between the two. The Rebel XS, unlike Nikon D60, is compatible with other older Canon lenses, while the Nikon D60 is incompatible with most of the old Nikon lenses.
The second category cameras are those that are for professional photographers. These are bulkier and expensive cameras and the intricacy of handling the cameras depend up on the expertise of the professional photographer. The Canon Rebel T1i 500D and the Nikon D5000 are two such competing cameras. If we compare the digital SLR cameras Rebel T1i 500D and the D5000, then we find that both the cameras are more or less the same, except some differences. For instance, the T1i has an ISO range of 100-12800, whereas the ISO range of D5000 is 100-6400.
The last category of compare digital SLR cameras of Canon and Nikon are the cameras that combine the elements of the above two categories. That means these are the cameras for amateurs with the enthusiasm and acumen like professional photographers. The Canon 50D and the Nikon D300 are the cameras in this category. Both the cameras are very efficient and share almost similar features. However, there are some feature differences between the two. For instance, the Canon ISO range is 100-12800 compared to the ISO range 100-6400 of Nikon D300. In addition, the Canon camera weighs slightly less (29 oz or 822g) than the Nikon (32.6 oz or 925 g), so it is somewhat less bulkier than Nikon.
